Café on the main square – tradition meets modern design
The café on the main square has been a feature of the townscape since 1904. The latest renovation focuses on generous lighting in the front dining area through a long window section and extends the outdoor area to the southwest with a balcony and a new sidewalk café facing the main square.
Café, bar & ice cream
The bar area can be used flexibly: as a classic bar in the evening and for café service and ice cream sales during the day. An integrated ice cream display case also allows sales via the second entrance to the main square.
Two entrances to the café
The bar area and ice cream sales area can be accessed separately. The flooring marks the paths: terrazzo flooring at the second entrance around the bar, herringbone parquet in the rest of the café.
Flexible room layout
Curtains create flexible partitions for intimate bar areas or separate event spaces in the club room.
Barrier-free toilet facilities
The elimination of the stairs to the upper floor allowed for barrier-free access and the placement of the toilet facilities on the ground floor.
Centerpiece – cake display case
Directly opposite the entrance is a floor-to-ceiling, custom-made glass cake display case between the existing columns.
Seating niches & city views
Black leather benches form various seating niches, while half-height textured glass partitions create privacy. Historic city views and a map in the hallway connect architecture and local history.
Club room & furnishings
The rear room is multifunctional – it can be used for events, sports, or music. The furnishings combine vintage furniture, mid-century elements, and classic coffee house furniture.
Art & Tradition
A mural by The Hague artist Prof. Willy Hengl on the east facade has been preserved; this tradition is continued in the interior with wall designs by Hans Rauchegger.
Guest Balcony
The new balcony offers additional space for summer evenings, especially when the main square guest garden is occupied by events.
Design & graphics
The logo and menu were designed by MO-design and are based on neon signs and typewriter fonts from the 1950s – a subtle reference to the long history of the building. The façade is further accentuated by classic neon lettering.
